With a degree specialisation in illustration, David worked as an illustrator primarily in watercolours and mixed media, for clients such as Penguin, Thames & Hudson, The Radio Times, The Economist, Thorn EMI, Bank of Cyprus and Cyprus Airways.
This traditional training and ability to draw is evident in a lot of The Ayres’ work. Nowadays illustrations are usually digitally produced – the traditional drawing board, paints and brushes all long since packed away.

A specialisation in architectural illustration has now proved useful again for some of The Ayres’ client base.
Hand-drawn skills are still as important today, even though illustrations are produced on-screen rather than on paper.
This allows for editing and colour changes to refine drawings until they are just as required.
