This London Borough of Wandsworth, single-form entry school has long survived on its reputation for excellence to ensure the classes in each year were full.

With the recent decision by Wandsworth Council to make the school two-form entry, the head teacher Mr Steph Neale had to promote the school to ensure full classes to achieve maximum funding.

Our task was to let the outside world know that ‘BP’ is a great school to send your kids to. Through good design, focused in areas that would make a difference, we have given Steph the tools to help achieve this goal.

It is counter-productive to create a new identity where the existing one is embedded, established and loved.

We refreshed and updated the old school logo, as a vector file. This means it can be enlarged to any size and remain clear and sharp. We created a range of logos for use on any background and media.

We drew up a set of clear guidelines and put all the logos on the website for approved suppliers to download, therefore saving the school administration staff valuable time.

The new identity was applied across all the school’s communications material. This ensures a strong and consistent brand message wherever the identity is seen.

This included letterheads and business cards for the school and PTA and a set of Word templates for production of A4 and A5 communications in-house.

Of primary importance, once the branding was sorted, was designing the website.

Anything and everything of use relating to the school had to be included, from essential curriculum information to updates on sports and clubs and PTA details – it’s all on the website. And, most importantly, it had to be easy to find.

When the site was launched, teachers were briefed to encourage parents to “check on the website” when asked general school questions. Thereby freeing up their valuable time to concentrate on teaching.

When prospective parents visit the school they are greeted with bright, colourful, positive displays featuring the range of school activities on offer. ‘Etched’ logos are proudly displayed on glass entrance doors around the building.

One innovation we implemented is a magnetic display board in the school entrance featuring the school staff arranged by their year groups, as well as admin, classroom assistants, kitchen, support staff and key PTA people and governors. This helps parents easily identify school staff and makes them more accessible.

To complete the suite of communications we produced a beautifully printed prospectus. This is a non-time specific publication to give it a longer shelf life.

Our in-depth knowledge of the printing process allowed us to help the school efficiently maximise their investment in printed communications. For example – we utilised the cover design of the brochure to produce a folder with pocket to carry A4 information sheets.

Beatrix Potter school now has a consistently branded suite of communication materials with which it presents itself to the prospective parents as well as creating a thoroughly professional image to the local community. •
